The Biodynamic Planting Calendar grew out of Rudolf Steiner’s indications on working with the cosmic rhythms of agriculture, given in his Agriculture Course in the 1920s. The modern sowing and planting calendar was developed through decades of practical observation and field research, most notably by Maria Thun, whose work became the foundation for the widely used biodynamic calendar.

The calendar helps farmers observe the rhythms of the Moon, planets and constellations and use them when planning sowing, planting, cultivating and harvesting. Different periods are associated with root, leaf, flower and fruit crops, helping growers bring greater awareness and rhythm into their farm work.

For biodynamic farming, the calendar is not meant to replace the farmer's judgement. Rather, it is a tool for developing observation, timing and a deeper awareness of the farm as a living system. The Indian calendar is adapted to astronomical data and timings relevant to India, making these rhythms more practical for Indian growers.

At BKK, we see the calendar as another way of learning to work with nature rather than simply work on the land.
